Improves comfort and health.

As nature provides the antidote for all maladies, science is making great strides in understanding much of the complexities that fuel the body’s function.

The consumption of a part of an animal’s body being good for the same part of your own body is an interpretation of Homeopathy: Like Cures Like.

A holistic, species appropriate diet for your pets should include this understanding in the form of a balanced, organic whole food that mimic the appropriate natural prey diet.

The consumption of quality whole foods (plant or animal) universally contains a safe and balanced blend of antioxidant, because all living organisms use them to prevent oxygen damage.

2759_464660823606522_588503781_nAt Sage, we address the issue of many dogs and cats not receiving the nutritional benefits of raw bones with our Bison Bone Reduction. Our reduction, made from marrow and knuckle bone, provides the entire group of essential fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, K1, K2, Proteins, Complex B, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Lecithin and Methionine. Sage’s 20 Hour Bison Bone Reduction supports immune system, brain, growth and development. We have formulated not only a safe alternative, but a nutrient dense supplement, that thru synergistic nutrients and proprietary herbs known to influence anti-inflammatory action, provides building blocks of collagen proteins which maintain and help rebuild where needed.

In situations of repair and healing, it is important to understand that the process of collagen formation is severely hampered when the body is experiencing inflammation. Inflammation disorganizes the strands of collagen forming the repair, and greatly slows the process. Collagen formation is very complex; without all the many processes aligned in the body for allowing collagen strands to intertwine and bind properly, scar tissue, stretch marks, the supple flexibility of tissue, can all be hampered, leaving the tissue weakened and susceptible to irregular bumpy mounds, or deep pits with more disfiguring results.

The gelatinous blend found in the Bison Reduction is rich with the entire extended family of joint building molecules known as glycosaminoglycans. Individual members most commonly found in supplement, such as glucosamine,  chondroiton sulphate, or hyaluronic acid, lack the synergistic support of the whole food source. The processed supplements don’t hold a candle to a gelatinous rich broth.

906165_472108972861707_534473217_oGlycosaminoglycans will naturally adhere to collagen anywhere in the body, moisturizing all layers of the skin, helping the tendons and ligaments stay supple, and generally keep the body looking and feeling younger.

These molecules attract up to a thousand times their own weight in water which coats the joints and tissues in electrically charged clouds, transforming ordinary water molecules into a protective layer of super lubricating fluid.  This is a wonderful preventative strategy against the calcification process in the aging body. This is superior support for active animals, growing animals or those limited with the discomforts of arthritis.

With a better understanding of the complexity of the collagen producing process, we formulated a recipe and strategy that best delivers the full utilization of not just the nutrients of marrow and knuckle bones, but also synergistic nutrients the research shows to encourage via, Bio-transmutation (where the body combines two or more nutrients to produce another different nutrient) production of it’s own master antioxidant, Glutathione. After the body receives adequate amounts of this combination of nutrients, it then (if needed), produces the glutathione, believed now to be a key to turn off the body switch responsible for chronic inflammation.

Nutrients that encourage stem cell production, are also formulated into the reduction and are important for the accelerated healing process.

The slow, long reduction time is known as hydrolytic cleavage. Twenty hours at gentle heats acts like a hacksaw, so the water molecules neatly chop long tough protein strands, pull apart connective tissue, and release the entire family of glycosaminoglycan molecules. Overcooked meats or cooking with excessive heat traps these flavorful nutrients in a matrix of mostly indigestible  protein strands, denying the body of much of these vitality and longevity properties.

At Sage, our intention has consistently been to provide a superior, all-natural, species-appropriate, heritage nutrition that fuels effective function. Holistic (from the Greek, “holo”, meaning whole) also takes into consideration  the individual. Whether human or pet, we all have our own unique strengths and challenges which can derive great benefit from supplementation with the appropriate absorbable nutrients.

The Sage Difference

Feb 12, 2012   //   by Sage Pet Foods   //   Blog  //  4 Comments

Sage Pet Foods
Sage is raising the bar in effective pet nutrition. Your dog and/or cat will quickly feel the advantages!

Fermented produce, super foods, sea vegetables, and a proprietary blend of herbs and probiotics naturally all in one, with raw quality hormone free proteins, organic fruits, berries, herbs and health enhancing spices.

The Goal

To provide an ancestral diet, as close to authentic as possible with the added advantage of the latest researched backed nutritional breakthroughs. To address what I believed was most negatively influencing the health of our modern day four legged family members.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and that is what we at Sage strive to provide. Food as Medicine. The latest nutritional strategy designed to fuel all body systems, supporting effective defenses against a world of off gassing modern materials, poor to non-existent nutritional standards for our pets, busy stressed household environments, support against the ravages of our modern world, the increase of disease, a decrease in life expectancy. The writing is on the proverbial wall, but by the grace, and the closest innovation in pet food advancement to address such drastic decline has been the Raw diet.

The research bares out the advantages of a Raw diet; my own personal experience erased any lingering doubts. Personally, I couldn’t get past the frozen vegetables, still it did not deliver the full nutrient potential of quality grown food. My research into my own healing and that of senior family members introduced me to, among other things, the health enhancing properties of fermented foods. The fermenting process broke down cell walls exposing nutrients as well as producing some vitamins and allowing for double extraction of some health supporting herbs. But most importantly it’s easily assimilated in the intestinal tract to quickly and effectively deliver to the body systems.

Next was to supply the highest quality of naturally grown fruits, berries and vegetables, to provide a full spectrum of nutrients. Keep it as local as possible to support our community, and provide the local immunity wisdom of our own produce to best address local health challenges. The hundred mile diet.

Based in natural strategies for health, our food choices, in the five element health theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine target and provide energy to effectively fuel the function of each organ and body system. This makes it very simple, provide optimum easily assimilated nutrients that fuel the body, and the body will strive to achieve as nature intended, Balance and Homeostasis.

The new Science of Epigenetics now shows us that the vitality and health of living cells does not depend on the nucleus or DNA , but the environment of the cell. The environment of the cell is determined by the effective function and nutrition of the membrane of each cell.

Longevity now (according to the research) is understood to be a result of Telemere length and the nutrition that support and effect it. Quantum Sciences are providing many insights and strategies for the challenges of todays world. At Sage, we continue to invest in research and development for the benefit of all our family members, and recognize with sincere and deep appreciation, the many gifts of being a proactive pet parent.

Diet and Autoimmune Diseases

Dec 12, 2011   //   by Sage Pet Foods   //   Blog  //  4 Comments

Diet and Autoimmune DiseasesAuto immune diseases:  Where the immune system mistakes host cells for invaders.

More commonly recognized autoimmune conditions include:

  • Arthritis
  • Hyper- and Hypo-Thyroid
  • Diabetes
  • Addison’s disease
  • IBS (Irritable bowel disease)
  • possibly Parkinson’s disease

These diseases are all consequences of the immune mechanisms gone awry.

The Immune System:  A complex system influenced by bone marrow produced stem cells that become whatever cell the body requires. Some stem cells become B-cells and others, after the influence of the Thymus gland, become specialized fighter cells known as T-cells. These cells patrol the body and gather at strategic sites such as the spleen and lymph nodes to form an organized stand against invaders.

The invaders are protein molecules called antigens. The antigens can be opportunistic bacteria, or virus cells, seeking an imbalanced or weakened site where they can lodge, compromising the integrity of the body system. Antigens have there own separate identity which is determined by their unique sequence of amino acids. To be effective, the immune system gathers its fighter B and T cells, then creates a blanket that forms a mirror image of the antigen which completely engulfs and destroys it. Once the immune system has created this mirror-image blanket of fighter cells, it retains the sequence pattern of the invading amino acids. The immune response mechanism is now equipped to quickly recognize and effectively deal with any repeat invaders. They will be less debilitating in the future if they’re not dispensed with before symptoms even occur.

Given the right circumstances, this wonder of nature can go awry and turn on itself. This is common to all auto immune diseases and is where diet and nutrition play a key role.

Some invaders resemble the host’s cells so closely that the engulfing antibodies (fighter cells) can get confused and attack their own kind. It appears as if the antigens which trick the host body into initiating an immune response may well come from the food ingested. For example, protein is intended to be broken down into unique amino acids during digestion. Incomplete digestion can make it possible for a complete protein molecule to enter into the blood stream before it reaches the small intestine. Once in the blood stream the ever-patrolling fighter cells engage and trigger the immune response mechanism to destroy what appears as an invading bacteria or virus cell.

Without sufficient appropriate enzymes to fully break down the foods, the autoimmune response mechanism can become the initiating factor that quietly becomes the reason for the cascading effects resulting in any of these full blown debilitating auto immune diseases.

Targeting effective digestion is a key component in the Sage diet. Raw proteins, cultured /fermented nutrient-dense vegetables provide exceptional digestion, added enzymes, superior full spectrum nutrition, and probiotics to enzymatically cleave the nutrients, delivering optimal vitality and longevity.

The Importance of Bone Health

Dec 11, 2011   //   by Sage Pet Foods   //   Blog  //  4 Comments

Bone HealthHealthy bones are resilient. They’re hard to break. They last a lifetime.

When we look at many of the bone diseases we find that the primary cause (other than infectious causes) is really nutritional deficiencies, or a combination of diet and sedentary lifestyle. Diversity is the key to overall health. Seasonal foods provide nutritional diversity. Running, jumping, agility, tracking, Frisbee, swimming, other dog playmates, new interesting natural environments, going off the path in your off leash park are all ways to keep activities fresh, challenging and fun.

Muscle responds to exercise, becoming more toned, more active and larger and bones also respond to the right type of exercise, weight bearing. Agility provides excellent controlled opportunity for strong bone formation. Like micro tears in muscle when exercised, repairing and coming back stronger, healthy bones respond the same. Bones strengthen through exercise, and the supporting muscles build and strengthen to support the frame.

Far more then just calcium and phosphorus, bones are more an orchestra of boron, magnesium, selenium, lysine, vitamin D, vitamin C, copper, zinc and vitamin K2. They all assist absorption, support, building and repair. In human studies, bones rebuild themselves every seven years, so there is no need for life long bone disease. When diet does not supply all the minerals required for whole body health, hormonal changes, drug interaction or genetic deficiencies, the body will leach minerals from the bones to make up for the deficiency.

How do you ensure the body is absorbing the nutritional foods you are supplying it? Provide a diverse array of probiotics. Nutrients are absorbed in the intestines, where the micro-biota ( formerly micro-flora) enzymatically cleave (completely separate) the nutrients from the foodstuff, making the nutrients bio-available, and fully absorb-able. Nutrients separated from fiber, fats, and bacteria are then utilized by the body through the blood stream to fuel the body where needed. Bones have their own blood supply, constantly delivering fresh nutrients and clearing away exhausted cellular debris.

Health conditions that require drug therapy can also play a role in bone mineral loss. According to Dr. J.E. Williams, steroids, usually given to knock down the immune system to manage inflammation, is one of the main drugs that can cause severe bone loss. During the SARS epidemic in China, individuals with life threatening lung infections received massive doses of cortisone, causing a meltdown of the bones. The bones can literally fall apart in the body.

Anti-seizure medicines, cancer, and chemotherapeutic drugs, cyclosporines, thyroid hormones (particularly Synthroid), and bone health drugs (like Fosamax), have dramatic changes in bone density, often cause side effects like stomach pain and constant nausea. According to Dr. J. E. Williams they build the wrong kind of bone. After time, it produces a more brittle bone not the resilient bone you want. For unknown reasons this problem is found most often by a dentist where the jaw is targeted and bones cells die. These are only a few examples.

So what does it all mean?

You have two goals. First should be a nutrient plan for prevention. Second, if bone loss is a reality, partner with a holistic minded physician or veterinarian who knows bone health, who can work with you and will help you overcome the problem with regular evaluation and changes in lifestyle and nutraceutical supplementation.

What Is Holistic Nutrition?

Sep 5, 2011   //   by Sage Pet Foods   //   Blog  //  1 Comment

Holistic Nutrition

Holistic medicine is a return to the basics, a way of looking at nutrition and health by exploring the quality and appropriateness of the food in comparison to the individual body’s needs. In recent years, science has had a hold on the civilized world, and food manufacturers use this knowledge to persuade consumers to purchase their goods rather than use the medical wisdom passed down through generations.

In this shift towards feeding our family’s bodies what is appropriate to health needs, seasonal, and of good quality, why not look at your pets’ food needs in a similar light? Different animals have different diatary needs, but the basic idea is simple. Feed them good quality, hormone-free, organic, healthy foods optimized for their unique species and they will have an infinitely better chance of living a longer, healthier life.

Just like humans, each animal is uniquely different, and will have individual optimal diets. Food grown in the best environment possible produces the best nutritional basis for a healthy diet. Sage works with Master Organic Gardener, Adrienne Daniel and Qualicum Country Farm to supply you and your pets with incredibly high-quality, nutrient-dense foods.

The following words are key:

Natural - Un-processed or un-refined foods (whole grains).

Alive - Contains live enzymes (sprouts).

Good Quality - Grown in nutrient-rich soil free from pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
